28 Jul “DM FOR PRICE”. Will this make or mar your business?
For the sake of clarity, DM in the internet space means “Direct Message”. when an online vendor says you should send a DM, they are simply saying you should send a private message.
Most product based online businesses (Facebook and Instagram) and the like, have the tendency to ask you to “DM for price” when you enquire about their products. Instagram is most notorious for this and to make matters worse, it’s becoming common practice.
Imagine this, you are scrolling through Instagram and you come across a beautiful pair of shoes that will perfectly fit your outfit for an upcoming wedding ceremony. You click on the post, read the description and everything checks out only for you to see “DM for price” boldly writing underneath the product image. “Arrrgh”, you roll your eyes and move on in search of another vendor.
That is exactly the same way prospective customers feel when they sight that phrase “DM for price” instead of the actual amount of the product and to be frank, all I hear is the sound of money flying out the window.
WHY DO VENDORS DO THIS?
They’ve got a lot of reasons to justify this act which includes, promotion of exclusivity, helps them identify serious buyers. keeps information from competitors, creates bonds with customers in the DM to mention a few.
Though these vendors have seemingly fair reasons for hoarding price from the public, they should also keep in mind that potential customers may look elsewhere for that item as the patience and attention span of social media users have dropped in recent times.
SO, WHAT’S THE WAY FORWARD?
Clients want control and valuable information. Many of them resent being asked to go through many procedures just to get a product or service. As an online vendor, you should;
- BE CRYSTAL CLEAR: Once customers trust you, they will purchase and refer your services.
- OWN YOUR PRICES: If you charge $1 million for your product then so be it. You can then convince them why they should spend that amount and the value they will gain from your product or service.
- BE CREATIVE: You can create content that forces your customers to engage with your posts; there are many ideas for engaging posts. This way you can create that bond and connection
